“The economic crisis that started in US housing markets in 2007 quickly swept across the world market. A long period of stagnation and austerity now seems to be the order of the day. While all working class people have felt the impact of the crisis on their lives and work, the crisis has also been a ‘black depression’ for African-Americans. Adolph Reed has been at the centre of political debates on the economic impact of the crisis and the limits and failings of the Obama Administration. He has long lamented the paralysis of the US left, arguing that the crisis of the US left is not one of ideas, but of organizing. The challenges have been to move away from the doctrine of support ‘for the lesser evil’, the left’s shift
to the right under Obama, and begin to explore new possibilities for the US left.”

Wednesday, June 30, 2010
6:30pm – 8:30pm
Windmill Line Co-op (125 Scadding Avenue)

After a week of protests and action by the labour movement and working class communities to the policies of the G20, one of the final battles raged in front of Novotel, a hotel in our community where workers were on strike. Police had already shown their willingness to brutalize peaceful protesters and ignore our civil liberties over the past days.

On Saturday evening, they arrested more than 300 peaceful protesters and bystanders, including many of our you as well as striking hotel workers during a peaceful rally on The Esplanade. This occurred while police forces stood back while black bloc vandals created havoc in the city of Toronto.

We, as the Esplanade community, will not accept such blatant disregard for our human well-being and our hard-fought civil rights. Working people have a right to protest increasing poverty, cuts to services and bailouts for the rich.

Join us on Wednesday, June 30th at 6:30 pm for an Esplanade community townhall. All are welcome and needed.

Townhall Will be Held at:
Location: Windmill Line Co-op on the 10th floor (125 Scadding Avenue)
Time: 6:30-8:30pm

Achieving meaningful reforms under capitalism is increasingly difficult. And sometimes the sheer magnitude of the problems facing the world can make us feel small, isolated and beyond the capacity to make a difference.

But nothing could be further from the truth, and that’s why this year’s annual Marxism conference in Toronto — with the theme “A planet to save, a world to win” — is so important. Organized by the International Socialists, we hope the conference can be a place where we link struggles and share ideas. With over 40 talks in three days this coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the Marxism 2010 covers a wide range of issues.”
