“It was in the mid-1990s, while a visiting professor and interim chair of social anthropology at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, that Nancy Scheper-Hughes learned about illicit organ harvesting at police mortuaries. She had heard rumors of body theft in Brazil, but in South Africa, she saw eyes (for corneas), heart valves, and bones taken without consent from victims of political and criminal violence. Spending time with a state pathologist, she came to understand how laws were bent in the pursuit of organs to be used locally or sold internationally. Since many of the victims were involved in the anti-apartheid struggle, Scheper-Hughes called the practice ‘medical apartheid’.”
