The destruction of the Babri Mosque led to the worst communal fighting, read anti-Muslim pogroms, post-independence India has ever witnessed – and was largely responsible for the mainstreaming of the Hindu nationalist BJP party. Fast forward ten years, and note that the second worst act of communal fighting in India occurred under the government of the BJP, in the state of Gujarat.
