“Nick Griffin, the leader of the British National Party, has paid a secret visit to a First World War memorial in Belgium … It was built to commemorate the thousands of British and Commonwealth soldiers who died in the Ypres Salient in 1914-17, and its walls are inscribed with the names of 54,360 men who died for the British cause – including the 40th Pathans, an Indian [sic] infantry regiment which suffered great losses.”
A short history about the 40th Pathans; readers may be interested to know that the first WWI monument to the 40th Pathans was built on the Pakistani side of the Khyber Pass. The reason being that the 40th Pathans were recruited from the Pashtun villages of the region. Indeed, Pathan is simply a synonym for Pashtun, i.e. the ethnic-group that comprise the Taliban.
