“Some students sewed their mouths shut. At least six abandoned the strike to seek medical treatment, Arellano said.”
I can just picture it, as the rich kids decide to sew their mouths shut, start to do it, and then realize what a stupid idea it is.

“A former Canadian bishop has been charged with distributing and selling child pornography… Earlier this year, Lahey oversaw a multimillion-dollar settlement with people who said they had been sexually abused by priests in the diocese dating back to 1950.”

“No longer the stuff of disturbing futuristic fantasies, an arsenal of ‘crowd control munitions’, including one that reportedly made its debut in the U.S., was deployed with a massive, overpowering police presence in Pittsburgh during last week’s G-20 protests.”

“At least we can take some comfort in the fact that Harper is just another hypocritical and self-serving politician and not a history teacher.”

Public lecture on Friday at 7 PM at the Ryerson Student’s Centre, 55 Gould St (near Church).
An Evening With Steve Williams
Opening remarks by Sam Gindin, CAW (Ret.)
Introduced by Stephanie Ross, York University
“In 1997, in the wake of Clinton’s historic attack on social assistance, welfare and public support measures for the poor, activists in the San Fransisco area formed POWER: People Organized to Win Employment Rights. Since its inception, POWER members have waged more than twenty campaigns to improve the living and working conditions for welfare workers, domestic workers, low-income tenants and other working class people of color. The struggles
and campaigns of POWER have been watched by activists across the continent, as they have involved some of the most creative and effective community organizing strategies, crucially linking political dimensions of race, class and gender. They continue to inspire.
Join us to hear Steve Williams speak about POWER, and organizing working-class communities in the current context of the economic crisis. Introductions and opening remarks will be made by Sam Gindin, CAW (Retired), and
Stephanie Ross, York University. With Q & A.”

The Cuban government has tweaked its programme to develop more small-scale farming.
“[The] government says it has lent 1.7 million acres of unused state land in the past year to 82,000 Cubans in an effort to cut imports, which currently make up 60 percent of the country’s food supply. … The state still sets the price — but the more the farmers produce, the more they sell. They also try to grow better-quality produce, which fetches a higher price. [Farmers] are not told what to plant.”

“The provincial debt in New Brunswick increased by $438.6 million in the 2008-09 fiscal year, more than three times the amount projected in the Liberal government’s budget… the government collected less than it expected in mining and corporate income taxes, but more than projected in harmonized sales tax and personal income tax.”

“Hatred of Jews lingers on, but discrimination against Jews is no longer common … This is particularly evident in the Middle East, where there is no historic tradition of anti-Semitism. The Israeli government insists that its wars and its oppression of the Palestinians are actions of the Jewish people as a whole, defending their interests as Jews. The world media repeat this lie. It is not surprising that many victims of Israel’s crimes blame the Jews. The Israeli government’s actions create a hearing for anti-Semitism.”

“Interim [sic] government spokesman [sic] says two outlets have been taken off the air under a government emergency decree announced late Sunday that limits civil liberties and allows authorities to close news media … Protesters say at least 10 people have been killed since the coup, while the government puts the toll at three.”

“[By suspending the constitution, the coup-government has] empowered police and soldiers to break up ‘unauthorised’ public meetings, arrest people without warrants and restrict the news media … The measure empowers police and soldiers to arrest without a warrant … The measure also permits authorities temporarily to close news media outlets”

Hilary Clinton is an established liar. In the lead up to the U.S. invasion of Iraq, she said:
“Iraq both poses a continuing threat to the national security of the United States and international peace and security in the Persian Gulf region and remains in material and unacceptable breach of its international obligations by, among other things, continuing to possess and develop a significant chemical and biological weapons capability, actively seeking a nuclear weapons capability, and supporting and harboring terrorist organizations.”
