But the language of the resolution, obtained by Reuters, appeared unacceptable in its present form to the veto-holding United States and other Western countries, diplomats said.

Palestinian civilians remain at risk of being killed or injured in the Israeli air strikes and are increasingly lacking adequate medical care food, medicines, electricity, water and other necessities, Amnesty International said today after three days of the Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip in which more than 300 Palestinians have been killed.
“It is utterly unacceptable for Israel to continue to purposefully deprive 1.5 million people of food and other basic necessities. Such a policy cannot be justified on any security or other grounds and must end immediately,” said Amnesty International.

“[S]cores of the wounded are clinically dead. Others are so badly disfigured; I felt that death is of greater mercy for them than living. We had no more room at the Qarara Clinic. Body parts cluttered the hallways. People screamed in endless agony and we had not enough medicine or pain killers. So we had to choose which ones to treat and which not to. In that moment I genuinely wished I was killed in the Israeli strikes myself, but I kept running trying to do something, anything.”

Paul Craig Roberts has it absolutely right, remaining silent in the face of Israel’s barbarity is nothing less than complicity.

–I don’t see how this kind of blind support for the Israeli state helps matters. Kucinich seems to be the only US Democrat that is inline with world opinion on this.

“With governments and international institutions failing to do their jobs, the Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions National Committee – representing hundreds of organisations – has renewed its call on international civil society to intensify its support for the sanctions campaign modelled on the successful anti-apartheid movement.”
Are there any non-violent alternatives to this strategy?

Our history will be recorded as such.
“The war against the Palestinians arises from the merging of the Zionist view of Jewish exceptionalism with the view in the United States of American exceptionalism, … which is the war against the world’s poor and dark-skinned people, the war of conquest carried out to enforce a rule of worldwide apartheid by a culturally Euro-American, racially white, highly industrialized capitalist elite.”

–There is nothing right about the attacks on the Gaza by the Israeli state. Collective punishment is against international law. Purposely cutting off medical supplies, energy, and water of a group of people is against international law. This attack is supposedly 6 months in the making, so the idea that the entire move is not premeditated has to be rejected. Depending on the source and the point that is trying to be made, the corporate backed media is either saying that Hamas doesn’t really represent Palestinians in Gaza, or that any attack from Hamas is an attack from all Palestinians. You cannot have it both ways and it shows the true absurdity of the idea of a free press that exposes moral wrongs around the world. The Canadian government, instead of pushing for peace is also supporting the Israeli state’s actions — how is that the Canadian thing to do?

–The Premier is having one of his delusions again. The “capital spending” is the Atlantic Gateway (read: Atlantica) and it was on the books to begin with, so it is not new spending. Also, that capital spending will not amount to any growth in the economy since its entire premise is based on a strong US consumer economy for imports from China. What we need is capital investment in the province to go towards productive ends, not just building roads. Our government needs to start buying paper products made in New Brunswick and our municipalities need to start looking at ways of building our local economies in ways that do not depend on box stores and foreign investment. Wake-up, Shawn, our economy is not alright nor is it headed in a good direction.

“Israel blames Hamas for primitive homemade rocket attacks on the nearby Israeli city of Sederot. [Between] 2001-2008, these rockets killed about 15 Israelis and injured 433, and they have damaged property. In the same period, Gazan mortar attacks on Israel have killed 8 Israelis.
Since the Second Intifada broke out in 2000, Israelis have killed nearly 5000 Palestinians, nearly a thousand of them minors. Since fall of 2007, Israel has kept the 1.5 million Gazans under a blockade, interdicting food, fuel and medical supplies to one degree or another. Wreaking collective punishment on civilian populations such as hospital patients denied needed electricity is a crime of war.
The Israelis on Saturday killed 5% of all the Palestinians they have killed since the beginning of 2001! 230 people were slaughtered in a day, over 70 of them innocent civilians. In contrast, from the ceasefire Hamas announced in June, 2008 until Saturday, no Israelis had been killed by Hamas. The infliction of this sort of death toll is known in the law of war as a disproportionate response, and it is a war crime.”
