A Powerful Trap: The Recurring Myth of Peak Oil

Posted by Jeff on October 1st, 2008

Think the exhaustion of the world’s oil supply will force humanity to adopt measures for ecological sustainability? You’ll think again after reading this article. We must adopt a rational planned economy while developing energy alternatives.

Where did my comment go? I tried to post it twice. Must have been lost in cyberweb, or maybe like Peak Oil it is a “zionist conspiracy” as one of the references for this article suggests. I think that this is a very iffy article (to put it mildly) and I think that John Bellamy Foster deals with the same subject matter in a much better way in “Peak Oil and Energy Imperialism” from the July-Aug Monthly Review.

Obviously the price of oil is due to speculation, but there is strong evidence that we are reaching the end of the readily available oil supplies and will have to supplies that are more expensive to process and difficult to get, and more environmentally destructive too (tar sands). I won’t pretend that I’m writing a comprehensive refutation of this whole article, but again, JBF’s MR article sufficiently helps with that. Also, the article appears to have many references, but it is most from Who’s over a Barrel, and this one:
Joe Vialls, “Russia Proves ‘Peak Oil’ Is A Misleading Zionist Scam,” rense.com (25 August 2004)

I think anybody who wanted to be taken seriously would avoid referencing an article with such a loony title/thesis. Maybe that is why Graham buried this article with much better ones.

I think that if the earth has more hydrocarbon supplies than expected, it could be worse than the threat of peak oil. If oil is running out, at least capital has an incentive to develop new energy forms. Without it, we may just keep burning fossil fuels until the world is flushed down the toilet, ecologically speaking.
Either way leads to the same conclusion: fight for socialism.
