Strike total in West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura

Posted by Graham on August 20th, 2008

–General strike across most of India called by the All India Trade Union Congress and the Centre of Indian Trade Unions. Workers are out in force to show opposition to the current government’s neo-liberal economic policy. Support the workers (or in this case stand in awe of their ability to organize).

  1. Jeff Says:

    A note on the numbering terms in the Indian dialect of English:
    “Lakh” = 100,000;
    “crore” = 10 million.

    Therefore, “The strike was spontaneous with [80 million] people participating in it.”

    And “Operations in about 40,000 branches were either fully or partially affected as about [900,000] employees went on strike.”
