SEIU President Andy Stern is developing quite a reputation as a ‘reformer’ of sorts in the US labour movement. But is this the way of the future? Workplace grievances handled not by shop stewards, but by representatives at a call centre far away from the worker? Would you trust this set-up if you needed someone to look over your work contract? This model resembles the Sierra Club or AARP, not labour unionism.
