Intel: Oddly, it’s ‘never even’ | rabble columns

Posted by Graham on 29th July 2008

–Rick Salutin writes about the call for more intel in the fight in Afghanistan. The Rand Corporation also released a new report to change the strategy from the “War on Terror” to “Counter-Terrorism”. Now, I am not sure if this is admitting that the “War on Terror” is the opposite of being against terror (that is the War on Terror is all for it), but it come damn close. The reality is that extremism tends to be a reaction to extremism (not necessarily in action, but certainly in support that leads to most acts) and the way to stop the cycle is to stop imperialism destroying people’s lives. It started as a question of economics, but lately it has turned into what could be mistaken as an ideological battle between two ideologies neither of which the people want.

Haiti: Mud cakes become staple diet as cost of food soars beyond a family’s reach | World news | The Guardian

Posted by Graham on 28th July 2008

–This has been going on for months, even as the G8 are meeting, and yet nothing is done to help the people of Haiti. We must demand that the international community give money and resources to this government, not as loans but as grants, to pay for infrastructure and food. The State must step-in and feed its people, otherwise, what is the point of the State? Canada owes the country reparations for causing much of this suffering, as does the US and France.

Blood and Oil: The Middle East in World War I

Posted by walker on 28th July 2008

After the end of World War I, most of the Ottoman Empire was carved up into “spheres of influence,” controlled mostly by the British and French. The remaining territories became the modern state of Turkey in 1923 — after a five-year struggle by Turkish nationalists against Western domination.

With little regard for cultural, historical, religious, and demographic considerations, the West sponsored the creation of several new nations: Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Thus, a “tinderbox” was built from Western greed, igniting a multitude of wars, revolts, coups, and military occupations that truly have made the defeat of the Ottoman Empire little more than a hollow victory.

–The Independent of London takes a look at the Cameron Tories all this week it an attempt to highlight their policies (what little they have outlined). As Bevan said, if you haven’t got a programme, a bogeyman will do. Apparently, nowadays the NeoLabour Party is the bogeyman.
