Israel Holding Indirect Peace Talks With Syria | New York Times

Posted by Faiz on May 21st, 2008

“Withdrawal from the Golan Heights is a contentious issue in Israel. The territory is a strategic plateau that overlooks a large swath of northern Israel. Israel has objected to past Syrian demands for access to the shore of the Sea of Galilee, a main water source for Israel.”

“[W]ithdrawal from the Golan would not be popular with Israelis. The reports in April of talks sparked outrage in the Israeli parliament, where several MPs [sic] said they would try to accelerate the passage of a bill requiring any withdrawal from the Golan to be dependent on a referendum.”

That Ministers of the Knesset are trying to institute laws requiring “referendums” before returning illegally held territories reveals the complicity of Israeli-voters in the country’s occupation of Syrian land.
