Workers met by locked doors at 2 N.B. call centres

Posted by Graham on August 30th, 2007

–This is why call centres should not be part of the future economic plans for this province. We need real jobs, with real security for workers, and real benefits. The only way that we are going to get this is if we start to build an economy that looks to the needs of New Brunswick first. We must demand better, we must start producing value-added products for local consumption, we must stop engaging in economic fairytale policies like those of `Atlantica’ and the `Gateway’ projects. Working people, students, and the public sector are going to have to start getting engaged in the political process and demanding real solutions. Otherwise, we are going to end up a third world province.

This is why I hate call centres, and the NB govt needs to start planning for the future because they will not be around for ever. They toork our jorbs!

Unfortunately this is the nature of the business. Being ready to move at the drop of the hat is what makes call centres unreliable and unaccountable employers in our communities. Union or no union, call centres move, atleast with a union proper severance could have been negotiated for the employees, however they will have to take whatever the company decides to give them. I agree with Graham, we need a real job creation strategy and a real plan for economic recovery in this province. Shawn Graham has to stop cheerleading for Atlantica and the Atlantic Gateway… these plans will only make a already bad situation in this province worse.

The fact that this news item does not generate the volume of rhetoric, self righteous indignation, and outrage validates the fact that N.B. politicians have been successful in marginalizing workers. The typical reader herein, will disassociate themselves with the issue, as they see the distance, and the “not in my back pocket” reality. That we can justify the vulnerability of these category of workers due to the provinces insatatiable desire to (increase employment at all costs)is inexcuseable. “And then they came for me and there was nobody left to help”
