Workers rally in Ottawa to mourn job losses

Posted by graham on 31st May 2007

–Canada is becoming a job-loss cemetery. We must demand action to stop the flow of manufacturing jobs overseas. Fighting the Security and Prosperity Partnership and the Gateway projects are a first step. Write to your member of parliament and your local NDP riding to voice your concern that this is not being debated and a firm stand against is not being adopted.

Venezuelan President Warns Private Media Against Inciting Violence

Posted by graham on 31st May 2007

–The people of Venezuela must stand-up to the media moguls and demand that the public airwaves not be used to incite violence. The only reason that violence is being used here is because that is the only way the right wing knows how to respond to its power being taken away. The people must stand united and must stand opposed to the lies coming out of the corporate media.

Venezuela, RCTV, And Media Freedom: Just The Facts, Please

Posted by graham on 30th May 2007

–The reality is that the people have complete control over the granting of the rights to use public airwaves. If the majority of the people want those airwaves used for public media instead of coup-leading private media then that is their right. Support the people of Venezuela and support the decision to remove RCTV from the public airwaves.

Despite the nonrenewal of its broadcasting license, cable and satellite broadcasts will still be available to RCTV; moreover they will continue to broadcast through their two radio stations in Venezuela. The new broadcasting license is being given to a public station, TVes-Venezuela Social Television, which will run shows produced mainly by independent parties. The station will be controlled not by the government, but by a foundation of community members, with one chair reserved for a government representative. TVes also hopes to reach into some of the most remote areas of the nation, not covered before by RCTV.

Venezuelan Government Accuses CNN and Globovisión of Inciting Violence

Posted by graham on 30th May 2007

–The power of the press should be used for peaceful purposes to expose corruption and provide indepth information to the people. It should not be instigating coups just because the owners of the media think that it is in their personal interests. Support the majority in Venezuela and demand democratisation of the media.

Middle East makes inroads into Alberta oil patch

Posted by walker on 29th May 2007

In a startling reversal of history, a Middle Eastern energy company is pushing into the Canadian oil and gas market looking for secure supplies, and, thanks to a battle with activist shareholders on this continent, it may be getting a good deal in the process.

The sale comes less than two years after Pogo bought the Canadian company for $1.8-billion and appears to have been the result of heavy pressure from activist investors, led by Third Point LLC, an aggressive U.S. hedge fund led by Daniel Loeb, who have been unhappy with Pogo’s performanc

Fidel Castro Ruz, “For the Deaf Who Won’t Listen”

Posted by Graham on 29th May 2007

–Castro has continued his written attacks on the dangerous idea of moving to ethanol as a fuel source. It is the wrong way to go, given the current system, if we actually consider that many people will go hungry or be driven further into poverty. The analysis is a must-read.

Foreign Policy In Focus | NAFTA: Kicked Up a Notch

Posted by Graham on 29th May 2007

–Important analysis of the current stage of NAFTA. The Security and Prosperity Partnership (Orwell would be proud) is the next phase of the growth in neo-liberalism in North America. This, along with the Gateway, are the new threat to Canadian independence and manufacturing jobs. We must stop the growth of the Gateway infrastructure if we are going to be able to have any independence politically and if we are going to have any meaningful growth of our economy.

Protests For and Against RCTV Continue in Caracas

Posted by Graham on 29th May 2007

–Rather nice to see those that are in the minority (the right-wing in this case) be the ones protesting in the streets. RCTV should have been closed a long time ago given its involvement in the coup to over-throw Chavez. However, it is rather great to see a government and a people demand that its public licence not be renewed and be isolated in cable TV land. There is nothing anti-democratic about this move.

N.B. considers tax breaks for businesses

Posted by Graham on 29th May 2007

–Big surprise… Wait, no, it isn’t. NB already has some of the lowest corporate taxes in Canada. Now, with all the public money going to building the “Atlantic Gateway” it wouldn’t make sense to increase taxes on corporations. If they did then the Atlantic Gateway might not be considered corporate welfare.
