–CSIS continues to step on the rights of Canadians. This organisation should be under democratic control… that is, under a very short leash.

–It is funny that the Conservative Party is getting all mad because it is in a minority situation and can’t just implement its backwards and reactionary laws that it promised the Christian Conservative Right to get elected. I would say that if the Parliament grinds to a halt over these laws it is because there is some semblance of democracy left. The reality, however, is that the Liberals will continue to complain about these laws but back them anyway. We need more people in the Parliament that are from the Left if we are going to stand up to these reactionaries.

–I am all for attracting new Canadians to our fine neck of Canada. However, this article mentions that the reason that the business group wants to “attract immigrants” is because there is a “labour shortage”. I have to say that with all the out of work people in New Brunswick it is hard to believe that anyone will swallow this reasoning. We need to make education free and introduce adult literacy for all if we are going to have a work force educated to do the jobs that are needed. We need to start investing in people that live here as well as bring New New Brunswickers into the province.

The alternative option, re-thinking NAFTA, is simply inconceivable; therefore militarizing the border is the only possible solution.
The logical progression of this policy ends with the killing of those who find working for nothing in Maquiladora plants intolerable. Individuals who are shocked when vigilante groups take this line of thinking to its natural conclusion are simply demonstrating their lack of understating of the issue at hand.

“There’s no more morality, fundamentally, in international affairs today than in the time of Genghis Kahn – there’s just different considerations.”
Noam Chomsky (paraphrased)
Those “considerations” we face today include the continued existence of complex and fragile life forms vs. the utter annihilation of humanity along with much of the biosphere.

As is often the case with Op Ed’s, this one manages to step over a striking and obvious question. The majority of Americans that make under $30,000, according to this column, tend to work harder and put in longer hours than other Americans with “Higher” education. So, the question is why do the educated ones work less? What sort of “work” are they engaged in where they are paid more for doing less?
This seems to fly in the face of the Horatio Alger mythos.

The link between globalization and something that economists call risk is a burden that rests on the shoulders of the working class. This new so called prosperous world economy has meant little or no job security, little or no health benefits, underfunded pensions, and growing personal debt. This degredation of living standards translates to a tax on the physical and mental health of individuals and their families. This imperialism or global economy destroys marriages, breaks families, and hinders the potential of our youth.

An inspiring account of Harry Magdoff’s activism and work in the New Left. It is remarked that analysis lacked in the New Left movement durring the ’60s. I would charge that it still lacks today, and would stress the importance of young activists knowing their theory and history.

An short analysis on the current labour reforms in China. I agree with the author that the labour reforms really mean nothing and are only meant to temporarily placate growing worker unrest in China. Unions in China need to actually build themselves outside the agency of the state in order to be a true union movement. We have seen inklings of an independent worker unionism emerging in China, lets hope it continues.

This is not a victory for anyone. Workers should not have to rely on the court system to get paid for the ammount of hours they work. The court case does serve to illuminate the system that Walmart has of squeezing free labour from its already heavily taxed workers.

Mel Watkins says what I think needs to be said; Canada and other western countries are to blame for the fact that North Korea was able to build the bomb. Canada’s Candu reactor is notorious for its lack of safeguards in allowing countries to convert their domestic nuclear program into a military offensive one. Canada sold a Candu to Pakistan which in turn allowed the Pakistan government to sell capabilities to North Korea.
