ZNet |Ecology | Who’s Paying?

Posted by graham on September 28th, 2006

–Exxon continues its pseudo-science lobby against the idea that global warming is happening and that burning oil is causing it George Monbiot reports.

On the letters page of the Guardian last week, a Dr Alan Kendall attacked the Royal Society for “smearing” its opponents. It had sent an official letter to Exxon, complaining about the oil company’s “inaccurate and misleading” portrayal of the science of climate change, and its funding of lobby groups which deny that global warming is taking place. The letter, Dr Kendall argued, was an attempt to “stifle legitimate discussion”(1).

Our PM has also publicly questioned the “science” of climate change. Apparently, the consensus of the entire international scientific community is of little meaning when a trained economist has doubts.

Although the PC website criticizes the Liberals for not meeting the Kyoto protocols, he recently stated that climate change is an “emerging science” and added: “If, back in the mid 1990s, we knew what we know today about climate, Kyoto would almost certainly not exist, because we would have concluded it was not necessary.”

We are now to assume that what was Liberal mediocrity is now good Cartesian skepticism.
