Alberta same-sex bill blocked by opposition

Posted by graham on 29th August 2006

–This is becoming the year of Conservative attacks on the lives of same-sex couples and gay and lesbians individual rights and freedoms. There is a move by the rather reactionary lot that make up the Conservative parties in North America to focus all their energy on oppressing this group of people. The Left must stand opposed to this Conservative behaviour and engage in some real tolerance and acceptance building.

Compliant and Subservient: Jimmy Carter’s Explosive Critique of Tony Blair

Posted by graham on 29th August 2006

–Yes, it is a critique of Tony Blair but it is nothing new at all. The Left has been saying this since he got into the leadership of Labour and brought his NeoLabour cronies with him. There is a new wave in the party under Brown to have more of the same only a little more right-wing. Things have to change in Britain and they are only going to do so if people continue to organise from the grassroots and either start taking back the Party or building a new one.

ZNet |Haiti | UN “Peacekeepers” Shoot Into Poor Neighborhood in Haiti

Posted by graham on 29th August 2006

–The oppression of the poor in Haiti is just unbelievable. The so-called peacekeepers in Haiti are treating the local population like animals. Our voices need to be louder here in Canada if we are going to stop the killing of innocent civilians.

Need more immigrants to boost workforce, businesswoman warns

Posted by graham on 29th August 2006

–More immigrants? We always welcome more immigrants, but what is to stop them from going out West with the rest of the people that want jobs? The real solution to the migration of our working people to Alberta is to start investing in real jobs and a living wage here in NB. The current plans for this province are not very inventive and are really just more of the same. If we want people to stay in NB and work we are going to have to change the way we look at our economy and the bank on the real value of our people here in the province.

5th suspect gets bail in Canadian plot - Yahoo News

Posted by graham on 29th August 2006

–One wonders how dangerous these suspected “terrorists” actually are if they are releasing them on bail all the time. I would suspect that they are not. We need to really start think about rights of people in Canada and some real ways that this country can deal with a government that seems to be more interested in sowing fear than peace.

Labor Law Change Could Gut Unions - The NewStandard

Posted by graham on 28th August 2006

–Unions are under attack again in the US at a very basic level. There are many in the business community that would love to re-classify everyone under the “supervisor” label so that the workers would lose their union membership. It is something that we should keep an eye out for up here as well.

Guardian Unlimited | The Guardian | Pope prepares to embrace theory of intelligent design

Posted by graham on 28th August 2006

–Crazy. Just crazy. The Evangelist movement in the US and around the world have been so successful in attacking materialism, especially evolution, in the minds of the general public that the Pope is now thinking of backing the lie of Intelligent Design. If ever there was a failure of our governments, scientists, and social systems including education and media it is over this issue. The attacks on materialism must be stopped and the only way this is going to happen is if people start speaking up in defense of those general ideas that are grounded in reality. ID is not anything but an insidious way to get people to rethink materialist explanations of reality and be put in a vulnerable position to be preyed upon by fundamentalist orthodoxy. We have to stop this before we are dragged back into the middle ages by these people who want nothing by power over others through the spreading of ignorance.

N.B. Liberals, Tories failing people in need: NDP’s Brewer

Posted by graham on 28th August 2006

–It almost goes without saying the the Tories and the Liberals have had a long history of failing the people of this province (especially those most in need). We are going to have to rebuild this province from the grassroots up and re-engage people in the political process. This would be a lot easier to do if we had a few New Democrats in the Provincial Legislature.

U.S. Aid Stirs Venezuela’s Suspicion

Posted by graham on 28th August 2006

–The political wing of US imperialism, US AID, continues it’s insidious work inside Venezuela to work against democracy. The people of Venezuela deserve to have their democracy without US medling. Hands-off Venezuelan democracy.

CBC News: Renegotiate NAFTA, new Green party leader says

Posted by graham on 28th August 2006

–Renegotiate? How about scrap it! The new leader of the Green (Elizabeth May) is touting that her leadership will bring the Green Party more to the left. I would say that any party leader that wins only 60-odd percent of the vote in a party against two openly right-wingers is not a solidly left-wing party. Also, if the leader can make that much difference in the party then it also is not a very democratic party and will not consistently represent any political position. The only party right now that represents the interests of the working people in the legislature of Canada is the NDP. Any suggestion that the Greens are going to do this is a joke as there are too many capital interests in the Greens to take their social positions seriously. It is time that the Greens were exposed as what they really are.

Guardian Unlimited | The Guardian | Britain ‘blocking peace deal’ for Uganda

Posted by graham on 28th August 2006

–This too frequently happens when the US and Britain are involved in conflict in other nations. They bring their prejudices with them and do not listen to the peoples’ representatives on the ground. The people of the conflict deserve the final say in their own conflicts, the international community should only be there to make it easier for these desires to be made. We must help stop the killing not get in the way of the peace process.

Martin Luther King, Jr. — “I Have a Dream” Speach

Posted by graham on 28th August 2006

We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.

This movement was not a movement of “gradualists” it was a movement for revolution.
