Existentialism is a Humanism, Jean-Paul Sarte 1946

Posted by Geoff on 31st May 2005

Existentialism is one of the most influencial philosophical currents of our day. This piece, by Sartre, is an attempt to “offer a defence of existentialism against several reproaches that have been laid against it.” Some of you may find this appealing, others not. Either way, it is, next to post-modernism, the quintessential philosophy of the late-modern period. In the words of a much respected comrade (and here, I agree wholeheartedly), existentialism is an adolescent response to capitalism in its geriatric stage.

BBC NEWS | World | Europe | What ‘Non’ means
–It is junk like this that we can expect from the press over EU constitutional issues. Have a read of the language of this article. The people have not rejected just the government, they have rejected neo-liberal policies that harm labour and cultural diversity. Quotes like this says it all about the current distain for democracy in our governments:

Mr Mandelson insisted the prime minister had wanted a yes vote, but admitted the campaign had exposed Anglo-French strains about competing visions of Europe.

He said some of the French “don’t understand the modern world”. He added: “They don’t like the liberal trend of policies. They don’t like the policies of opening markets, and freer trade, of economic reform, reforming the common agricultural policy and reducing that expenditure, and of social and welfare reform.

“All this has become wrapped up and embodied in this constitutional treaty which they see as somewhat alien, somewhat Anglo-Saxon.”
